Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office (Toronto) (HKETO), Ms Emily Mo, greeted the Year of the Snake by attending Lunar New Year gala dinners hosted by different sections of the Hong Kong-Canada Business Association (HKCBA) across Canada, during which she highlighted Hong Kong’s dynamic business environment, economic strengths, and its continued role as a global financial powerhouse.
On February 5, Ms Mo attended the Lunar New Year Celebration held by the HKCBA Montreal Section. She updated participants the latest developments of Hong Kong. As the world’s freest economy and the third-largest international financial center, Hong Kong has climbed to the fifth place in global competitiveness. These achievements are reflected in record-breaking business figures, with 1.5 million local companies and 15,000 non-Hong Kong registered companies now calling the city home.
“Investment confidence in Hong Kong is stronger than ever,” said Ms Mo. “Last year, Invest Hong Kong assisted a record 539 overseas and Mainland companies in setting up or expanding their business, a 41% increase from 2023.”
She further highlighted that the International Monetary Fund has reaffirmed Hong Kong’s resilience and stability, recognizing its robust financial system and institutional strength. Hong Kong’s role as a “super-connector” and “super value-adder” continues to bridge traditional and emerging markets, creating vast opportunities for global businesses, including Canadian enterprises.
With three airlines now operating between Canada and Hong Kong, and the opening of the Kai Tak Sports Park, Ms Mo invited Canadian business leaders to explore the city’s dynamic opportunities and vibrant culture.
On the west coast, Ms Mo attended the galas held by the HKCBA Vancouver Section and the Calgary Section on February 6 and 7 respectively, where she promoted Hong Kong’s strengths as global business hub and a premium gateway to opportunities. The three receptions attracted more than 1,000 guests, including government officials, as well as senior representatives from trade and business, academia, and cultural sectors.
During her duty trip to Calgary, Ms Mo presented 2025 HKCBA Calgary Scholarship to award recipients at a student reception on February 7. The Scholarship, sponsored by the HKETO, is awarded to Calgary university or college students who demonstrate a strong interest in Hong Kong and a clear motivation to pursue an exchange programme or work experience in the city. This year a total of four students from the University of Calgary and Bow Valley College received the scholarship.
The Toronto and Edmonton Sections of the HKCBA will have their Chinese New Year receptions on February 15 and 20 respectively. HKETO Director and/or representatives will attend to share the joy of a prosperous year ahead.
